xmas is over!!!!! thank goodness.
kids are happy with their items. so are the adults.
my car is still broke.
but i have a digital camera!
we seem to be getting by ok with just the truck. for right now. i miss my car.
this is what happens when you let your kids watch discovery channel:
my 7 year old daughter comes to me last week and asks me what sperm is. 7 years old. of course my first question to her is where she gets the word and in what context so i can know how to explain. damn discovery channel and fish spawning and sperm and stuff. ok.
so i proceed to tell her that its what guys/ males have to help make babies. girls have eggs, guys have sperm. its like this with all animals. both get together to make a baby.
she's fine with that explanation and goes about her merry way. meanwhile, her mom(me) is still in shock. its gotta come up sooner or later, right?
my blog has been looking empty because i have been working ALOT lately. i'm having a hard time staying caught up with a lot of things. here it is almost 0630 and i'm doing this blog and washing some laundry. yeah, thats me 'multi tasking'.
lemme tell you about xmas.
on xmas eve morning i get off work. i was off xmas eve night. i had about 4 hours total sleep xmas eve. not all at once.
charlie and i have to wait until the kids are asleep so santa can come. i finally get to sleep around midnight. AT 0230 THE KIDS ARE UP. i'm up til 0430 sleep til 0730. up for the rest of the day. i have to be at work at 1700. but i got off at 0400 and slept all day and all night and here i am!! i have to keep asking people what day it is because i lost track last month.
we go to my moms xmas morning...they cook breakfast, we open presents. blah blah blah.
i'm sitting there eating and realize that this is the first real food i've had in 2 days.
how sad.

ga-dang
finally. i have a day off. sort of. i didnt work last night. but i did have to go in from 0300-0600 this morning. ugh.
final proof that different shifts do different things different ways.
--pretend you understand--
when i got in to work this AM i pulled a pending log...lets me know what hasnt been done...i pulled a log for yesterday to see if anything got missed. it did. a patients labs got kicked into the 2400 hour and the label does not print anything in that hour. its either 2359 or 0000. our LIS does not recognize 2400. an ongoing unresolved issue. so at 0330 i force printed a label for it and this mornings tech asked me about it. i told her i came in at 0300 and when i pulled a log to just make sure, i found it. 3rd shift tech shouldve caught it. but our 3rd shift tech for the night was a regular 2nd shifter person. ugh. so it wasnt caught. or just nothing was done about it.
and going in with a hangover so does not help. nope.
had to take my sister to the dr. today. that was an all day thing. not that i mind. i dont. thats why i took the night off.
so whats the first thing i do when i get home? drink. oh yeah! a 'shot of happy'. whisky is my drink of choice. at least this headache thats been plagueing me all day is gone!!!!!!!!!
i have worked last thursday night thru this past wednesday night, and friday morning. i go back saturday night and sunday night and them i'm off mon-wed.
yay!!!!!
hopefully the new tech will start soon. i dont know how much extra hours i can pull and still live.
my daughter asked her dad today about 'retirement'. shes 7. what a conversation that was.
i got 'the bourne ultimatum'. saw it in the movie theater. good movie.
3rd floor nursing station. i wrote "there are trolls in the elevator" on one of the white boards wednesday night. this morning a nurse asked me if the trolls were still there. and she didnt even work wed night! i had to admit to her that i didnt know since i just got here at 0300 and havent had a chance to ride the elevators. so i wasnt sure.
peace out....be careful of the trolls.

finally finally finally
damn. we finally got the xmas tree up. it has lights and about 8 ornaments. no garland, no tree topper thing. its pretty. a frazier fir. and tall.
as you can see, there are no presents under said tree. i'm still working on that part. kinda hard when you're working what seems like every day of the week. and 3rd shift. and with one car right now. yeah, mines kinda broke. dont know whats the matter with it. we're going to have it looked at after the holidays.
tonight will be, i think, night 6 of an 8 day stretch at work. i'm used to doing 3 in a row, occasionaly 4. not 8. its not been bad. except for the couple of patients with some neuro issues, its all going well.
i havent posted in a bit, what with being busy, so this is my contribution.
peace out.

night from hell
Matt's better today than he was Saturday. He's still sad. And, yeah, I'm still pissed.
Five day stretch is FINALLY over. I don’t go back until Thursday night.
Last night was a night from hell. With the fire and pitchforks and everything.
Damn chemistry machine broke down. It’s the only one we have. We don’t have a back-up.
I get into the lab and I swear its almost 80 degrees in there. We had fans going, I rechecked all the thermostats and its almost like a sauna. The dimension (chemistry machine) went down because it overheated. We had to cancel some orders and reorder them to send to New Hanover. That was not fun. And then Becky had 2 stat crossmatches to do. I did not stop from 2100-0030. ugh. Beats boredom I guess. I was really really thankful I only had 12 on pickup. Finished that and had to get 2 more down in ICU. Came back, Barbara had finished hers and we chatted. A patient threw up on her while she was getting labs. Ewww. The bad mojo had engulfed the whole lab and its occupants.
I had to make myself remember how to do sed rates on the little machine because I haven’t done them since I was taught. And I did a strep.
Poor Becky. She hasn’t even been with us doing 3rd shift for a month yet and this happens. She's my MLT. She came from New Hanover. Over there its one person per department. Over at Cape Fear, you ARE the lab. All the departments. At night. During the day we have more techs. But at night, its just 2 of us.
I didn’t think my night was ever going to end. Oh. And I had to go back last night and re-stick a patient I had just stuck because we had to send her labs across town and over there they have a different chemistry machine which uses different tubes for certain tests.

santa
IS THERE A SANTA CLAUS?
As a result of an overwhelming lack of requests, and with research help from that renowned scientific journal SPY magazine (January, 1990) - I am pleased to present the annual scientific inquiry into Santa Claus.
No known species of reindeer can fly. BUT there are 300,000 species of living organisms yet to be classified, and while most of these are insects and germs, this does not COMPLETELY rule out flying reindeer which only Santa has ever seen.
There are 2 billion children (persons under 18) in the world. BUT since Santa doesn't (appear) to handle the Muslim, Hindu, Jewish and Buddhist children, that reduces the workload to to 15% of the total - 378 million according to Population Reference Bureau. At an average (census) rate of 3.5 children per household, that's 91.8 million homes. One presumes there's at least one good child in each.
Santa has 31 hours of Christmas to work with, thanks to the different time zones and the rotation of the earth, assuming he travels east to west (which seemes logical). This works out to 822.6 visits per second. This is to say that for each Christian household with good children, Santa has 1/1000th of a second to park, hop out of the sleigh, jump down the chimney, fill the stockings, distribute the remaining presents under the tree, eat whatever snacks have been left, get back up the chimney, get back into the sleigh and move on to the next house. Assuming that each of these 91.8 million stops are evenly distributed around the earth (which, of course, we know to be false but for the purposes of our calculations we will accept), we are now talking about .78 miles per household, a total trip of 75-1/2 million miles, not counting stops to do what most of us must do at least once every 31 hours, plus feeding and etc.
This means that Santa's sleigh is moving at 650 miles per second, 3,000 times the speed of sound. For purposes of comparison, the fastest man-made vehicle on earth, the Ulysses space probe, moves at a pokey 27.4 miles per second - a conventional reindeer can run, tops, 15 miles per hour.
The payload on the sleigh adds another interesting element. Assuming that each child gets nothing more than a medium-sized lego set (2 pounds), the sleigh is carrying 321,300 tons, not counting Santa, who is invariably described as overweight. On land, conventional reindeer can pull no more than 300 pounds. Even granting that "flying reindeer" (see point #1) could pull TEN TIMES the normal anount, we cannot do the job with eight, or even nine. We need 214,200 reindeer. This increases the payload - not even counting the weight of the sleigh - to 353,430 tons. Again, for comparison - this is four times the weight of the Queen Elizabeth.
353,000 tons travelling at 650 miles per second creates enourmous air resistance - this will heat the reindeer up in the same fashion as spacecrafts re-entering the earth's atmosphere. The lead pair of reindeer will absorb 14.3 QUINTILLION joules of energy. Per second. Each. In short, they will burst into flame almost instantaneously, exposing the reindeer behind them, and create deafening sonic booms in their wake. The entire reindeer team will be vaporized within 4.26 thousandths of a second. Santa, meanwhile, will be subjected to centrifugal forces 17,500.06 times greater than gravity. A 250-pound Santa (which seems ludicrously slim) would be pinned to the back of his sleigh by 4,315,015 pounds of force.
In conclusion - If Santa ever DID deliver presents on Christmas Eve, he's dead now.

my neighbor came over today about 1230 to let us know that my sons cat was in her yard by her garage and he couldnt move. charlie and matt went to get him. ended up taking him to the vet where he had xrays. his spine was shattered from a gunshot. he had to be put to sleep. my son is devasted.
merry freakin xmas..
i'm calm about it. not a good thing. angry as hell. extremely angry.
it is my experience it is never a good thing for me to be "quiet angry".
